St Nicholas' Cathedral, which was completed in 1448, held the title of the tallest building in Newcastle for 396 years until 1844, when St Mary's Cathedral succeeded it by a matter of metres. St Mary's Cathedral also held the title of the city's tallest building for 122 years.

The former Post office building on St Nicholas' Street in Newcastle was built 1871- 1874 by James Williams. [ 1] Originally there were separate entrance for male and female staff. [ 2] The Post Office closed in the late 1990s when Royal Mail restructured. It is now used as offices of the NBS division of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
